Royal
Portrush Golf Club 2015
Carr Mara 2015 in Royal Portrush was an outstanding success. From the outset
the warmth of the welcome which was genuine and immediate. The Sunday practice
day was accompanied by a fantastic air show by the Red
Arrows. The display
included
swoops by the Arrows up and down the golf courses and across the sea.
On day two practice day, another great golf day
weather wise, saw all the 14 teams readying themselves for
contest. Monday night, we all dined in the Mermaid
Restaurant in Portrush. A great setting and superb food.
First day of the tournament also saw splendid
weather conditions and great golf scores. Tuesday night's entertainment
was a special occasion laid
on by the host club. The food and drinks were supplied by them.
Whiskey toasting laid on by the host club at the Bushmills
Distillery was a feature as well as a display of Irish Dancing which included
notable contributions by some of our nimble players, another memorable
night. The final day of the tournament saw the host club pull away
from the field and score a popular success to win the Carr Mara
Trophy.

Results:
Drama unfolded unfolded for the Gross Prize and
the Champion Golfer award. Andrew Morris, Royal Portrush and Kevin
Hammer, Pine Valley, tied with
totals of 76 and 70 for 146. A play off ensued over three holes
and Andrew Morris emerged the winner by a shot. The Senior Event
medal Winner was won by Merrick McQuilling with a total of 155,
a very popular winner too. Pine Valley were triumphant to secure
the overseas prizes with some splendid play.
Appreciation:
We cannot but marvel at the conditions of the
golf courses and their presentation. The Players were treated to
food and drinks at the half way huts
on both courses.
The Gala Night Dinner with black tie, was a fitting
finale to a great tournament. The key note speech was delivered
by Joe McGoldrick of medical
and surgical fame with great wit and skill.
We find it difficult to express our gratitude
to our hosts. Captain Sir Richard McLaughlin, his committee, his
members, his catering staff, his
links staff, his Pro shop staff were quite superb in every way.
We must give special mention to Simon Rankin Captain 2014, John
Bamber, Hon Treasurer, Philip Tweedie, Hon Secretary for their
great work over the past two years
Finally Wilma Erskine for everything, it would
not have been possible for such excellence without her.

"I was in a
bunker,
It was rather deep,
Took a while to get outta there,
...best part of a week,
Followed up with a long iron,
To some hairy,
greenside rough I tell you baby,
This Portrush is pretty tough..."
