The
Carr Mara Golf Competition.
The Carr Mara Golf Tournament was the product
of a good dinner in Winged Foot Golf Club in June 2006.
Joe McAleese and Conor O'Brien were on a golf trip in North America retracing
the steps of Francis Ouimet.
After golf with Len Horan, President of Winged Foot Golf Club, the conversation
turned to the recent passing of two great sporting men, Wellington
Mara the number 1 (oldest member) of WFGC and New York Giants
Supremo who passed away in 2005 and JB Carr, the legendary amateur
golfer, who had passed in 2004.

The two Joes were old friends. JB had intimated to Joe Mac that he would appreciate his name being associated with a competitive amateur event. Wellington was everything that is good about American sport.
Wellington and JB had one thing in common. They gave of themselves and improving life for all those who crossed their paths and in the communities they inhabited.
After further discussion by the 3 diners , a plan was hatched and thus began the Carr Mara Golf Tournament.
The Carr and Mara families were contacted and agreed that their fathers' names could be associated with the event. Mary Carr donated J Bs British amateur prize as a trophy.
Clubs were contacted and a positive response was received to their participation in the proposed tournament. Many individuals helped in the initial stages of planning but special mention must go to Ed Slevin from Pine Valley.
Sixteen months later the first event took place in Portmarnock Golf Club and the rest is history.
The trustees wish is that the event promotes good fellowship, good golf and the opportunity to help our fellow travellers down the fairways of life.
